I can’t be the only person out there who thought that these new Tom Ford shade and Illuminate Lip Duos were actually cream shadows. In fact, I may or may not have tried one of them on my lids (FYI, I don’t recommend doing this, although, off the record, it was kind of fun!).

Are these cream shadows or what??

Tom’s new shade and Illuminate Lip Duos look like eyeshadow duos, cost about as much as his eye products (they’re $60 each), and they even come with little sponge applicators.

Thing is, they aren’t for ‘ze ? eyes… No, these are for ‘ze ? lips!

These duos go on creamy but dry to a velvety matte finish. I think they look a lot like the Chanel Velvets, but they feel lighter than Chanel’s do to me, which I wouldn’t have guessed possible, because the Chanel velvets feel sooo barely-there noticeable.

If you don’t like to feel like you’re wearing lipstick when you are, I think you’ll like how these feel.

Next-level highlighting and contouring

Tom Ford is big into contouring, with darker colors to sculpt and create angles, and lighter colors to accentuate and draw the eye to the high points of the face. It’s a structured, architectural makeup aesthetic, and it’s the kind of aesthetic these duos are designed to bring to lips.

The two coordinating colors are for doing easy ombre matte lips. You use the darker shade to outline your lips and the lighter shade to highlight the inner areas. Or, you can just be a lazy lip lady like me and use the colors separately/by themselves, because let’s be real — I ain’t got no time to carefully blend two lip colors together. Plus, I left lips with dark outlines behind me in the ’90s.

Still, part of me loves how Tom Ford took these to the next level, and I gotta hand it to the Tom Ford girls who have the chutzpah to highlight and contour their lips, because that’s some hardcore makeup commitment, baby!

Layering is SO key

OK, I admit it — these lipsticks are a lot of fun to apply. Normally, I’ll always choose a lipstick bullet over a palette, and I talk mad smack about silly sponge applicators, but for some reason, loading this sponge and swiping it across my lips is hella satisfying. I can completely cover everything in one layer (they’re crazy opaque!), and my lipstick and lips look preternaturally smooth, like I made a sketchy side deal with a trio of witchy sisters for eternally youthful, velvety lips.

Mmm, Vanilla Coke… (But they’re unflavored.)

Now here’s the kicker: these aren’t the longest-lasting lip products in the Tom Ford fam, so you might want to have your favorite lip balm, lip pencil and maybe even a long-wearing sticky gloss handy, because these don’t last long if you wear them on their own. I only get about an hour or two at the most, so I suggest lining your lips with a lip pencil first and popping a layer of TF shade and Illuminate on top.

And if you have dry lips like I do, lay down a lip balm before you use the lip pencil, because when I skip the balm, my flakes go bat-sh@t cray.

Yup, the formula is drying.

Final verdict

Props to Tom for creating an innovative formula that looks lovely on lips (especially in pics), but I think these really should last longer for the price.

I’ll always have mad love for Tom Ford lippies, but there are other lipsticks in the TF line that last longer, leave my pout less parched (like my main squeeze, Sable Smoke), and are probably a better deal overall for your moolah.

Adventures in Pilates…

That Pilates class I went to on Sunday in Petaluma was pretty cool. It was my first time ever at Pilates, and it was definitely a different workout than I’m used to.

I like to run, and I’ve been liking the HIIT classes I’ve been going to. Basically, I’ve always liked workouts where the music’s blasting and you grit your teeth and go into beast mode, but Pilates wasn’t like that at all. It was very elegant and concentrated, and very focused in a different way.

1. Zebra Sarasa 0.7 Gel Pens

Every once in a while I whip out this classic, which you can build from sheer to medium coverage, and fall in love with it again. I keep coming back to it over and over, year after year. It looks like skin, doesn’t feel heavy, and it doesn’t budge once it’s on.

I hadn’t used it for a year (no good reason, really) but grabbed it on a whim last Saturday before brunch at Wishbone. I wore it with MAC Mineralize Skinfinish natural Powder, and I liked it so much that I’ve been wearing it each day this week.

You know this because I’ve said it about a million times, but I’m bad about building breaks into my workday.

There, I said it. שוב. I’m the type of person who, if I’m doing something and I get on a roll, will do it for hours until I burn myself out.

This is a bad thing.

But when I take breaks throughout my day (please, Karen, remember this time!), even when I don’t feel like I need them, I’m much happier overall.

When I have a long stretch of time, like when the baby’s napping or when my parents are viewing her, and I work for 50 minutes, or some other good chunk of time that’s less than an hour, then take a 10-minute break, I’m less frazzled and much more productive.

And I’m not allowed to do anything productive during these breaks. That’s crucial. I can opt for a walk in my front yard, or dance around for a song or two, or drink some water, or have a cup of tea, but I don’t allow myself to “think.”

4. Trader Joe’s Spud Crunchies Potato Snacks

There’s a reason you’re staring at this crumpled, jaggedly broken bag of Trader Joe’s Spud Crunchies Potato Snacks, and it’s because the bags don’t last long whatsoever in my house before they take damage!

In the weeks because I discovered these, this was the first time I was able to take a reasonably ok picture of a bag in the house, LOL! because I always eat them so rapidly that I forget to take a picture before I toss the bag.

Brace yourself… These are potato chips in the shape of a French fry.

Yes, they are tasty, to put it mildly, but WARNING! They aren’t exactly diet food. One small 4-oz. bag includes four servings that are 150 calories each…

Why, cruel world!?

Because I’m inclined to sit in front of the telly with them and go to town, I take a small handful out and put them on a paper towel or in a small cup. then I close the bag and put it waaaay in the back of the cupboard.

5. The whole Truth, starring Keanu Reeves

What a enjoyable surprise! I found this Keanu courtroom drama while randomly surfing around on Amazon Prime video the other day. I started it thinking it would be boring enough that I could leave it playing in the background while I colored a page in my coloring book (ya know, one of those ones to help you de-stress), but I actually got sucked in.

Keanu is good in it (for Keanu)! and yes, I don’t care if he never wins an Academy Award. He’ll always be my high school ? לִמְחוֹץ.

In an alternate universe, Keanu from the speed years and I are living happily ever after on a farm on Kauai where we raise goats and chickens and grow papaya with our brood of five kids and 12 cats.

חוּקִי. My stylist pal Alis — hair whisperer/red lipstick enthusiast/friend to the kittehs — used Oribe Gold Lust Pre-Shampoo Intensive treatment pre-shampoo mask on me last Sunday, and my hair still feels like silk. It’s like sexy slow-mo incredibly bowl commercial hair.

My brush slides ideal through it, all the way down, zooooop, and when I run my fingers through it, the strands feels soft and moisturized, like slippery, twirly cooked spaghetti.

Between the chatting, tea drinking and shameless reading of us weekly magazine (even the reeeeeeally old ones), I lose track of time at the salon, but I think it was on there for 30 minutes or so.

Then, Alis rinsed it out, worked shampoo and conditioner through, and styled.

Masking on the left, and the final results on the ideal (don’t ask me why I look like a deer in headlights, LOL!).
Even now, days later and after a co-wash with Drybar double conventional (more on this in a few) and a styling session with my trusty ghd curling iron, I can still feel the after effects of the mask’s softness and bounce, and seriously, where the heck did all the knots I normally have go? I have, like, no tangles.

See, this is why I listen when Alis raves about something, because the results are otherworldly hair.

The last thing she got me hooked on was R+Co High Dive…and now I’m on my third bottle. Did I really need to fall in love with a $69 (!) hair mask? probably not… but man, it’s really, really good.

Trying to be hardcore when you’re a lot more like no core

I’m pretty sure I don’t have any muscles in my core. Instead, there are tumbleweeds and fluffy clouds in my abs…

I’ve never naturally had much core strength, and the C-section obliterated what little strength I did have before, but I’ve been on a mission to strengthen my core lately.

It’s something to do, LOL! Also, I like to switch things up in my workouts, because one thing I’ve learned from doing HIIT this year is that switching things up keeps it interesting.

Your core will love you and hate you at the same time.

I’ve been doing lots of Pilates-based core work, and it’s really hard, dude! This beginners abs workout by Blogilates is one of my current faves. even after two weeks of it, my lower abdominals feel stronger (and my lower back aches less). I discovered muscles down there that I didn’t know I had. Or, maybe I did know I had them before, but I forgot they were there.

I used to think Pilates was really boring, and I still kinda do, but this video goes through everything you need to execute each of the moves correctly, like where you need to squeeze and how to hold your body.

It’s thorough, and when you’re trying really hard to squeeze the crap outta your quads, your booty and your stomach, extensive helps.

By the end of this video, I’m dripping in sweat.

Anyway, long story short, try it sometime!
